June Food Guide

Canada's Food Guide June Update

Hey – it’s the start of berry picking season in Canada. Check out our new Strawberry pancakes recipe video. Berries are a great way to add flavour and colour to muffins, oatmeal, salads, and yes, pancakes! Cooking with overripe berries is also a great way to make something delicious and reduce food waste.

We have many tips to help reduce food waste at home. You can:

  • Plan meals and only buy the food you will need and use.
  • Try recipes that will help use up the leftovers in your refrigerator.

FEATURE TIP

Think twice before throwing. Oddly shaped vegetables and fruits are just as tasty as their perfectly shaped counterparts. Bruised or overripe vegetables and fruits can be grilled, roasted, added to stir-fries, batters, soups, or even blended to prepare sauces.

DID YOU KNOW?

Almost half of food waste happens at home. Every time we throw food in the garbage, we are wasting the land, soil and water needed to produce it. The food waste ends up in landfills and produces methane, a greenhouse gas more potent than carbon dioxide.

PLAN what you eat.

Next month, we’ll feature how to eat more vegetables and fruits.
